Senior Prom and The End of Innocence
Perfume Vessel
Sterling silver, enamel on copper and fine silver, garnets, marble; 8x8x8 inches; hand fabricated, one of a kind
This piece is staged in 1952 and celebrates a rite of passage in a teenager's life. Senior prom marks an exit from girlhood into womanhood, from high school into a larger worldly arena. Whatever she does next she does independent of the protective environs of home. This dress brings together those two worlds in a marriage of sexy and sweet and is staged in the 1950's fashion world that highlights femininity in the designs. It precedes women's lib and the birth control pill by a decade when dressing for men was in vogue. I wanted to capture all of those nuances in the design of this vessel and like other perfume vessels I've created, it is sculpture before function. It conceals its function as such. Like the teenager's future it's purpose remains mysterious but alluring.
